    Anonymity, efficiency wages and technological progress

    Although the industrial revolution is often characterized as the culmination of a process of commercialisation, the precise nature of such a link remains unclear. This paper provides an analysis of one such link: the role of commercialisation in raising wages as impersonal labour market transactions replace personalized customary relations. In the presence of an aggregate capital externality, we show that the resulting shift in relative factor prices will, under certain conditions, lead to higher capital-intensity in the production technology and hence, a faster rate of technological progress. We provide historical evidence using European data to show that England was among the most urbanized and the highest wage countries at the onset of the industrial revolution. The model highlights the effects of changes in the availability of information, typical of a modernising country, on efficiency wages and technological progress

    Commercialisation, factor prices and technological progress in the transition to modern economic growth

    We provide a model of the links between commercialisation and technological progress, which is consistent with the historical evidence and places market relations at the heart of the industrial revolution. First, commercialisation raised wages as a growing reliance on impersonal labour market transactions in place of customary relations with a high degree of monitoring led to the adoption of efficiency wages. Second, commercialisation lowered interest rates as a growing reliance on impersonal capital market transactions in place of active investor involvement in investment projects led investors to allow borrowers to keep a larger share of the profits. Third, the resulting rise in the wage/cost of capital ratio led to the adoption of a more capital-intensive technology. Fourth, this led to a faster rate of technological progress through greater learning by doing on the capital intensive production technology. Fifth, the rate of technological progress was raised further by the patent system, which allowed the commercialisation of property rights in innovations embodied in machinery

    The environmental noise level in the rejuvenation pruning on centuries-old olive tree

    ArticleIn the Italian agricultural economy, olive cultivation plays a fundamental role, and this is especially true for the southern regions where almost all cultivation is spread. In Calabria, in particular, olive cultivation has seen over the last few decades significantly improve the quality of production also as a result of investments aimed at the creation of new mechanizable plants and/or the modernization of existing ones; today some areas have got both PDO and PGI certification. In the ‘Piana di Gioia Tauro’, located north-west of the Reggio Calabria metropolitan area, olive growing extends over 20,000 hectares and the presence of centuries-old olive tree is still widespread. The olive varieties mainly belong to the local cultivars of ‘Sinopolese’ and ‘Ottobratica’, characterized by a remarkable rusticity and high development, perhaps unique in the world; they reach 20–25 meters high, forming what is called a ‘forest of olive trees’. The pruning operations are carried out by means of chainsaws of different power and size whereby, in addition to the previously described difficulties, operators are exposed to prolonged periods of noise levels. The purpose of this study is precisely to assess the exposure of operators to this particular olive grove. The aim is to identify the acoustic levels generated by the two pruning and cross-cutting activities, the risk thresholds and the exposure to which the individual workers of the two work sites are subjected, giving indications on the appropriate safety distances to maintain (according to current regulations) compared to noise sources

This particular methodology avails itself of both traditional historic surveys as well as the representation of knowledge through ontology. The methodology described here was developed in reference to specific cases of re-contextualisation of archaeological artefacts from Pompeii which are now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples

    Characterization of biochars produced from pyrolysis of pelletized agricultural residues

    Biochars produced from pelletized grape vine (GV) and sunflower husk (SFH) agricultural residues were studied by pyrolysis in a batch reactor at 400 and 500°C. Chemical and physical evolution of the biomass under pyrolysis conditions was determined and the products were characterized, including the main gaseous organic components. . Results showed a decrease in solid biochar yield with increasing temperature. Biochar is defined as a "porous carbonaceous solid" produced by thermochemical conversion of organic materials in an oxygen depleted atmosphere, which has physiochemical properties suitable for the safe and long-term storage of carbon in the environment and, potentially, soil improvement. The aim of this work is to improve the knowledge and acceptability of alternative use of the biochar gained from agro-forestry biomass residuals, such as grape vine and sunflower husks, by means of modern chemical and physical characterization tools

    Electricity from Wood: A Wood Quality and Energy Efficiency Approach to Small Scale Pyro-gasification

    AbstractThe global demand for renewable energy in the last years is facing innovations like the co-generation of electricity and heat from wooden industrial residues and biomass. Wood gasification is a very promising technique for conversion of wood chemical energy into thermal energy and into electricity. A new generation of small scale, moderately priced and easy to install pyro-gasification plants became available on the market, being an opportunity for the SMEs. These systems are also characterized by a remarkable operational easiness and great versatility in the type of used biomass, which can range from industrial residues (sawdust, wood chips...) to biomass of forestry and non-forestry origin. This study performed an extensive testing of a small size pyro-gasification plant capable of producing 30kW of electricity and 30kW of thermal energy, both net to enter in the network of GSE (Energy Services Manager) via the feed-in tariff and in a small district heating network or other uses. The process of pyro-gasification is analyzed in its entirety by a characterization of input biomass, pyro-gasification process monitoring, analysis of the quality of the produced syngas, characterization of residues due to the process (washing water smoke, charcoal...) and verification of the total efficiency. The electric efficiency of the system, from hardwood to syngas to electricity is quantified in being 12%

    A data-driven energy platform: from energy performance certificates to human-readable knowledge through dynamic high-resolution geospatial maps

    The energy performance certificate (EPC) is a document that certifies the average annual energy consumption of a building in standard conditions and allows it to be classified within a so-called energy class. In a period such as this, when greenhouse gas emissions are of considerable importance and where the objective is to improve energy security and reduce energy costs in our cities, energy certification has a key role to play. The proposed work aims to model and characterize residential buildings’ energy efficiency by exploring heterogeneous, geo-referenced data with different spatial and temporal granularity. The paper presents TUCANA (TUrin Certificates ANAlysis), an innovative data mining engine able to cover the whole analytics workflow for the analysis of the energy performance certificates, including cluster analysis and a model generalization step based on a novel spatial constrained K-NN, able to automatically characterize a broad set of buildings distributed across a major city and predict different energy-related features for new unseen buildings. The energy certificates analyzed in this work have been issued by the Piedmont Region (a northwest region of Italy) through open data. The results obtained on a large dataset are displayed in novel, dynamic, and interactive geospatial maps that can be consulted on a web application integrated into the system. The visualization tool provides transparent and human-readable knowledge to various stakeholders, thus supporting the decision-making process

    Unusual skin toxicity associated with sustained disease response induced by nivolumab in a patient with non-small cell lung cancer

    Introduction: Immunotherapy has shown efficacy in the treatment of different malignancies. Nivolumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor directed against programmed death-1, has been approved for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in pretreated patients. Although it is generally well-tolerated, immunotherapy may be complicated by a wide range of immune-mediated adverse events. We describe the case of an uncommon skin toxicity arising as alopecia universalis induced by nivolumab in a patient with NSCLC. Case description: A 58-year-old man received nivolumab for metastatic NSCLC after progression to 3 lines of chemotherapy. The treatment was prescribed in June 2016, and induced a rapid and significant disease response. Nivolumab was well-tolerated until May 2017, when partial alopecia at hair and eyelashes appeared. In the next months, alopecia became complete and extended to the whole body surface. The dermatologic picture was compatible with alopecia areata. A topical steroid therapy was attempted, without benefit. The patient refused systemic treatments and is still undergoing nivolumab without new toxicities and with persistent disease response. Conclusions: This case suggests that alopecia areata may be a rare immune-related adverse event of immune checkpoint agents. Its late onset in our patient is uncommon and unexpected, underlining that the risk of nivolumab-induced toxicity is not limited to the beginning of treatment. Despite its rarity, alopecia areata should be considered in the range of adverse events potentially induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors even in the long term. Potential association between toxicity and efficacy of immunotherapy in NSCLC warrants further investigation

    L’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia - INGV ha istituito il Comitato Unico di Garanzia per le pari opportunità, la valorizzazione del benessere di chi lavora e contro le discriminazioni – CUG nel luglio 2011, ai sensi della L.183/2010. Il CUG ha assunto, estendendoli, i compiti del precedente Comitato Pari Opportunità, ossia, come da delibera CD n.4.3.2.11 del 28/6/2011: • focalizzare i problemi relativi alle pari opportunità; • contribuire a migliorare la qualità della vita negli ambienti di lavoro e a valorizzare le risorse umane; • verificare gli equilibri tra i sessi nelle posizioni funzionali a parità di requisiti professionali; • formulare proposte per: la gestione flessibile delle risorse umane e le attività di formazione professionale; è inoltre chiamato a perseguire gli obiettivi della direttiva dei dipartimenti della Funzione Pubblica e per le Pari Opportunità del 4 marzo 2011, per esercitare compiti propositivi, consultivi e di verifica. I compiti affidati dall’Amministrazione da un lato e le sollecitazioni ricevute dal personale dall’altro hanno portato ad una serie di azioni, tra le principali: • la redazione di un Codice per la tutela della dignità delle persone e per la prevenzione delle molestie sessuali e morali dell’INGV, l’individuazione della Consigliera di Fiducia e l’avvio di un ciclo di seminari sull’argomento, nell’ambito della prevenzione delle discriminazioni; • una lettura di genere delle bozze dei nuovi regolamenti dell’ente, con proposte di modifiche ispirate alla Carta Europea dei Ricercatori – CdR (e.g. principi di Non discriminazione, Equilibrio di genere) e alla normativa in tema di pari opportunità e tutela della maternità, parte delle quali recepite nel Regolamento del Personale e nel Disciplinare in materia di orario di servizio; un’azione, questa, legata all’adesione in via sperimentale alla Human Resources Strategy for Researchers, iniziativa della Comunità Europea per l’effettiva implementazione della CdR; • nell’ambito del processo di valutazione della ricerca dell’ANVUR, l’evidenziazione di alcune criticità presenti nel bando, in relazione alla valutazione della maternità, risultate in una interrogazione parlamentare e in una lettera aperta, grazie al contributo dell’Associazione Donne e Scienza e dei CUG dell’INFN e del CNR.
